Full Description: Since 1969 the Athens Centre has been a focal point for academic and cultural activities in Greece. The Centre's Greek Language program, one of the most prestigious and comprehensive in the world, is offered on a year-round basis.
The Athens Centre's Greek Language courses are recognized by the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education (Hogskoleverket) and CSN.
The Centre organizes programs in Greece with participating colleges and universities in the United States and Canada in that emphasize classical, Byzantine, and modern Greek studies. The Athens Centre cultural programs include summer workshops held in poetry, art and Modern Greek on the island of Spetses.
The Centre cooperates closely with the Greek Ministry of Culture, The Fulbright Foundation in Greece, the cultural sections of various embassies, the European Union, and other educational and cultural organizations in Greece and overseas.
Service offered: I. Language Classes
The Centre offers Modern Greek language classes, from beginning through advanced levels, to adults of all nationalities. New classes are offered every month on a year-round basis:
Immersion classes: Monday through Friday, 1:00-5:00pm (3 weeks)
Accelerated classes: Monday through Friday, 1:00-4:00pm (4 weeks)
Intensive classes: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:30am-12:30pm (7 weeks)
Regular classes: Tuesday, Thursday, 6:00-8:30pm (12 weeks)
A three-week Modern Greek summer session is held each year on the island of Spetses.
II. Classics Semester Programs
In conjunction with selected American and Canadian colleges and universities, the Centre coordinates semester and shorter duration programs emphasizing ancient Greece, Byzantine civilization and modern Greek studies.
III. Cultural Programs
The Centre organizes poetry readings, theatre productions, exhibits, and other cultural events which are open to the public. Every summer, The Athens Centre Theatre hosts American theatre companies performing classic Greek plays in English translation, and other major productions.
IV. Summer workshops on Spetses
A three -week Poetry and Art Workshop are conducted every summer on the island of Spetses.
V. European Union Programs
In conjunction with NGO's in Europe, the Centre coordinates special programs with emphasis on cultural tourism and environmental matters. The last program in which the Centre was involved was the Leonardo Da Vinci Program on Cultural Tourism.
