DRIVING LICENCE

The competent authority for the issuing and delivery of driving licences, requests for replacement driving licences, and information on the costs of driving tests is the Transport and Communications Department of the local Prefecture.

The competent body for information of all kinds with regard to driving licences is:
    * Ministry for Transport and Communications
      Directorate General for Transport
      Directorate for Road Safety and Traffic
      Anastaseos 2 & Tsigante, 10191 Papagou

Conditions - The applicant must:

* Have his ordinary residence in Greece.
* Not hold another driving licence, of the same category, issued by Greece or another EU Member State (including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
* Be over 18 years of age for a motorcycle licence (up to 25 kW or power to weight ration of up to 0.16 kW/kg) or over 21 years for a licence to drive a motorcycle of any power or power to weight ratio.
* Meet the minimum physical and intellectual capacity requirements applying to category A.
* Have passed the theoretical and practical tests, following the mandatory theoretical and practical training.

Documents required

* Application - formal statement (this form)
* Photocopy of identity card or passport (if age of applicant not shown on these documents, an official document, indicating applicants age must be presented (birth certificate, military service certificate, etc.)
* Photocopy of a valid establishment or residence permit or other equivalent document, if applicant is not a Greek national, issued at least 185 days before the application or 85 days if applicant is a national of the EU or Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and which will still be valid until the day of reception of the Greek driving licence.
* Two recent passport-type photographs (colour)
* Two health certificates (from a general practitioner and an ophthalmologist) or a Higher Medical Commission report, as appropriate. (Two 32-euro deposits at the National Bank of Greece into the special account (law decree 638/1970) and 4 photographs. The physicians must be under contract with the relevant Transport and Communications Department. The above document is not required if applicant holds a valid driving licence of any category or sub-category).
* A 6-euro deposit slip from a Public Revenue Office.
* A Public Revenue Office receipt for the payment of the fixed stamp duty and third party levy of 18 euros for first licence and 27.02 euros for extension of category A licence.
* A photocopy of the driving licence, which applicant may already hold and presentation of the original.

Procedure

* Applications must be submitted at the Transport and Communications Department of applicants place of residence.
* In the case of an extension of a valid category A driving licence, a new document shall be issued with the same number as the old, which must be handed over in order to be destroyed.
* When receiving their licence applicants must surrender any motor-bicycle driving licence that they hold, which will be sent to the Traffic Police Department that issued it.
* Two years after the issuing of a motorcycle licence (up to 25 kW or a power to weight ratio of up to 0.16 kW) its holder may drive motorcycles of any power or any power to weight ratio.
* If applicant is the holder of another driving licence, issued by Greece or another EU Member State (including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein), this must be surrendered so that a new licence can be issued, in which all vehicle categories and subcategories which applicant is authorized to drive will be incorporated.
