Vodafone Greece’s 'telemedicine' program further expands
Vodafone Greece's innovative Telemedicine Program has been expanded and now covers 30 remote locations nationwide ranging from Evros and Kastoria in the north to Kastellorizo and Gavdos in the south. As part of its Corporate Responsibility program, Vodafone Greece has been systematically investing in telemedicine and in utilizing mobile communications technology in this sector. Vodafone Greece's dynamically developing network -a network that today offers almost 100%* population coverage- has made it possible to run the Telemedicine Program offering everyone ever increasing possibilities in this sector no matter where they live.
The Telemedicine Program is currently being implemented in 10 of Greece's regions namely the regions of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Thessaly, Sterea Ellada (Central Greece), Western Greece, the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, the Southern Aegean and Crete, covering locations ranging from remote Aegean Sea islands such as Anafi and Lipsi, to northern border municipalities such as Didymoticho in Evros Prefecture and Arriana in Rhodopi Prefecture.
In addition to covering patients suffering from chronic conditions, the specific Telemedicine Program also covers population groups deemed to be at high risk such as the obese, smokers, etc. The Program allows patients visiting a remote medical centre to undergo tests such as cardiograms using special equipment there, and for the data to be sent electronically to the Athens Medical Center via Vodafone Greece's mobile communications network. Specialists at the Athens Medical Center, such as cardiologists, then examine the tests and send their medical opinion back in exactly the same way.
Telemedicine allows preventative medicine to be implemented while also bolstering the sense of security felt by citizens in remote areas since it breaks down geographical barriers and allows everyone to check his or her state of health directly by coming into contact with skilled and experienced medical staff.
Vodafone Greece has been investing in the Telemedicine Program for the last 6 years. Since 2008 the program, which is organized and supported by Vodafone Greece, has been coordinated by the Local Government Authority Inter-Municipal Health & Social Solidarity Network, whose members include the municipalities involved in the program, with the participation of Athens Medical Center as the central hospital, and technical support and training from Vidavo.
